Criminal Minds season 13 episode 4 review: A complicated ‘Killer App’ case

Criminal Minds season 13 episode 3

Criminal Minds season 13 episode 4 was entitled “Killer App,” and it is an installment that has been teased in one way or another for a while. It’s been delayed in the past, presumably because of some violent content.

After we started to get into this episode we started to get a good sense as to why that was — this was a pretty freaky episode! Not only that, but it had a terrifying case at the center of it that we could easily see happening in real life: Someone basically using a drone as a dangerous murder weapon to take out victims in Silicon Valley. The person could and should have been profiled before they were originally hired, which is why in turn locating them was so hard: After all, there were many people who didn’t want to be on the hook for what he was doing.

Eventually, the BAU went down to business and did much of what they do best — gather clues, figure out evidence, and do everything that they could in order to get some of the information that they were so desperate to have. Jake Logan was apparently the UnSub and the one who seemed intent on murdering people with this drone, but through most of the episode something was off. He was a pretty hard UnSub to read, and what made it harder was that one of the women targeted in the case was Tori, a woman who was still hiding some secrets about her history. In between her past and the Peakstone organization desperate to keep some secrets about a drone strike overseas, there were motives flying all over the place to ensure that the secret of what happened at an elementary school would stay buried.

In the end Tori was targeted even after Jake was killed — it turned out that Peakstone wanted both of them dead. Jake was a disgruntled employee who ultimately started to act out after feeling like a murderer after the strike at the school — basically, the entire motive at the center of the case was trauma. Peakstone were the real murderers here more so than anyone else, and everyone who kept the secret of what happened were complicit.

CarterMatt Verdict

“Killer App” was a very good episode when it comes to freaking us out, but we would say that this one took a little long to get to some of the confrontations at the end of it. There wasn’t a whole lot in the way of character-building tonight other than Prentiss working with Alvez in order to tie up some loose ends regarding Mr. Scratch. (They did have a nice impromptu dinner in the closing minutes — anyone ‘shipping them now?)
