Chicago PD season 5 episode 4 review: Who covered for Ruzek?
Clearly, the writers wanted to paint the picture in this episode of Kevin Atwater as a haunted man struggling with what it means to be a cop. Were he not with the force, would he have asked his little brother to provide key information? Without it, it’s possible that the criminal du jour of the episode in Kurtis wouldn’t have been caught. Yet, in doing so Atwater could find his brother in danger down the road if those close to Kurtis choose to retaliate.
This is an episode entitled “Snitch.” There were many people within this episode who didn’t want to snitch. The negative connotation of the term is one that suggests that there could be significant danger for some characters on the show coming up. Atwater is just at the top of the list?
Before we continue, we should stop in and commend LaRoyce Hawkins for what should be viewed, beyond a shadow of a doubt, as his finest performance on the entire series to date. The scene with him pointing that gun at Kurtis was incredibly real and intense — you could feel just about every movement of his hand. Adding Hank Voight as the negative influence in the scene was all the more powerful. In not killing Kurtis, what Atwater did show was what sort of man he really is — someone who wants justice, but also doesn’t want it coming at the expense of someone’s life. He cares about preservation in some form.
There is a postmortem interview with Hawkins over at the link here, and we absolutely recommend that you check that out after reading the review.
What’s happening with Ruzek?
Throughout the season Adam has been on edge when it comes to using excessive force to get the job done, and tonight that almost came back to bite him. In the middle of an investigation he found himself getting physical with a person of interest to the point where there was a complaint. Had Upton not gone personally to the woman who filed said complaint and convinced her to withdraw it, there would be a far greater crisis on Intelligence’s hands. Denny is already watching Voight like a hawk, and these officers aren’t exactly getting the best influence in the world to teach them the difference between right and wrong.
When is the next thing going to happen that causes Adam to lose it, and what happens when this takes place? There’s a genuine reason to worry.
CarterMatt Verdict
Chicago PD season 5 episode 4 was one of the best of the entire short season to date, and it proved to be everything that we could want: It touched on themes of the episodes before while also presenting incredibly meaty material for Atwater, a character who often doesn’t get enough love.
