This Is Us season 2: Chrissy Metz on Kate’s surprise storyline

This Is Us is a show that clearly loves to surprise, and they absolutely did so with Kate on Tuesday night’s all-new episode. Maybe there were a few who predicted Kate’s pregnancy in advance, but how many of you were there? It’s a game-changer that came at the end of an episode all about children, and this is the sort of reveal that will fundamentally change her life. There are of course many wonderful things that come out of being a parent, but there are also some setbacks. As this episode progresses you will have a chance to see some of these things play out, both good and bad — you will have a chance to see Kate tackle the news, figure out the right way to tell Toby, and then also try and prepare for whatever her future with this child looks like.

Chrissy Metz is the person who will have a chance to take on this super-exciting material coming up, and in speaking on the subject to Entertainment Weekly she detailed more of what we could expect to see:

“When a relationship is new and you’re in the honeymoon phase and you’re still on the pink cloud, everything’s great … And listen, Kate and Toby have gone through a lot together, but they’re stronger than they have been perceived in a lot of ways. But things are going to definitely change in their relationship, and they’re going to come up against some issues that are going to challenge the relationship. Truly, truly challenge the relationship.”

We wouldn’t have expected anything less in this situation; Kate’s pregnancy is the sort of thing that could challenge many relationships and will challenge her, as well. It probably isn’t lost on her that this is a very high-risk sort of situation that she finds herself in where if the wrong thing happens, she could be put in a position where her own life gets put in jeopardy. This is probably something that much of her family will choose to remind her of along the way during this journey. They will just be trying to be helpful, but we are sure there will be times when this information is not information that she really wants to hear.

From a storytelling standpoint, we’re excited to write about this at CarterMatt for weeks to come — though we’re also equally worried about Kate’s future and that the writers have something tragic around every turn.
