The Flash season 4 episode 2 review: Couples counseling; another Thinker tease

Flash season 4 episode 2

Is The Flash season 4 episode 2 one of the funniest episodes that we’ve seen over the series’ run? We’d argue so. It’s definitely was one with plenty of awkward moments, and many of them came out of Barry and Iris’ decision to attend couples’ therapy together at the session of Caitlin.

Was the entire premise of this absurd? Absolutely, given that we are talking here about a superhero and his fiancée talking to a therapist who doesn’t know about any of their secrets. We don’t know how they didn’t have a better cover planned for going in there — they basically had to just make up a series of lies to get through the appointment! Barry had to bail once based on work, and when he returned the truth came out — Iris was struggling with the fact that Barry left to go into the Speed Force. He made a sacrifice, but didn’t take much time to consider some of her feelings in the process.

While we’re not sure how much more therapy we’re going to see these two characters undergo in the future this time together talking things over did prove useful — he understands now that he needs more empathy for what it was like for her being out there having to cover for him for so long. Sometimes, he spends so much time at STAR Labs that Barry probably does forget a little bit about the other side of things where he and Iris are just normal people.

Luckily, the wedding is still on and this was never meant to separate the two in the first place. It’s just another important hurdle for them to jump over.

Cisco’s Gypsy problem

Another comedic storyline this week came from Cisco’s realization that things with him and his girlfriend were not anywhere near as rosy as they should be. Why is that? She went out of her way in order to see him, but he blew her off in order to focus on work. He didn’t quite realize that it was One One One Day, a big holiday on Earth-19 that basically feels like their version of Valentine’s Day.

The end of the episode where Cisco turned things around was light and funny, especially with Gypsy reminding him just how absurd Santa Claus really is.

The villain of the week

Eh. That’s really our take on a guy in Kilgore who can manipulate technology. There is really not anything that is altogether interesting about him beyond his power, and he didn’t have a cool costume or anything that makes him memorable. The only thing notable here is perhaps his tie to The Thinker and that not everyone received powers from the Particle Accelerator.

As of right now DeVoe is still clearly buying his time and watching over everything with The Mechanic at his side. It’s a bummer that we’re only getting about a minute of him an episode given that he is by far one of the most interesting characters we’ve seen.
