Ray Donovan season 5 episode 10 spoilers: Ray vs. Sam
Think back to where things were at the start of the season, which was when we actually saw Sam reach out and ask for Ray’s help. She was the one bringing him on board! That feels almost like forever ago at this point given that so much has changed since that time — we’ve learned about who she is, and we’ve also seen the entirety of the Natalie James story play out. That story has, in turn, informed us as to just how ruthless Sam can really be.
Now, Natalie is gone, and even in the flashbacks we’ve seen how everything with Abby came to a close. Ray is now adrift, and in the aftermath of experiencing great loss the collaboration between him and Sam could turn into a war. We do think their current state is made all the more interesting when you think about what Sarandon had to say about this character to TVInsider recently:
“Sam takes what she needs in this world and she knows Ray likes to be told what to do, so they’re perfect for each other. He’s not the type to spill his guts—he barely even speaks!—but she can read him psychologically. She knows he’s tortured, and so is she. These are two isolated souls living in darkness.”
Why do we find this quote so interesting now? It mostly serves as a reminder as to why these two could get along, or why a feud between the two of them could be so dangerous: They understand each other in some rather significant ways. Ray on some level probably sees himself in Sam and the other way around. They can manipulate and perceive each other in ways that others cannot, and that makes them incredibly dangerous when they aren’t on the same side. They can drag their names through the mud and make sure each person feels like the other has no real motivation or hope left.
