Supermarket Sweep is coming back and we couldn’t be more excited
We’ve made it no secret to anyone working at CarterMatt that we love this show — love this show. It’s ridiculous, crazy, and makes almost zero sense. You have people throwing food into their cart as fast as humanly possible, giant inflatable displays with price tags attached to them, and the bonus round was effectively searching for a hidden pile of money located somewhere in the story. The end of the show every time felt somewhat akin to heist movie for whatever reason.
The series is officially coming back thanks to some of the fine folks at FremantleMedia, who are responsible for notably a wide array of unscripted programming. They know how to make established formats sing and we have a feeling that the same thing will be said for whatever this turns into in the end.
In a statement, Henry Howard, the son of the original show creator Al Howard, made some of his thoughts clear:
“I’m delighted that FremantleMedia has made the exciting decision to bring back this classic game show, and I look forward to working with their talented teams around the world. In honour of Supermarket Sweep’s return… I believe I’ll go shopping!”
Supermarket Sweep quickly developed a cult following during its time on the air in the early nineties, and was later revived by what was then PAX (now ION) back in the early 2000’s. This is a chance to adapt the show once more but we really don’t have to think that you do anything different than you did. There are few things that unite us these days, but going to the grocery store and scouting out food items is one of them. There is no official network home for the show just yet, but we would advocate for the show to air on ABC given their now-storied history of reviving classing game shows for primetime audiences. The only thing that may hold Supermarket Sweep back is that it may not be high-budget enough for them and what they want to put out there for viewers.
What do you want to see on a Supermarket Sweep revival?
