Why a Ray Donovan season 6 renewal should come soon
Also, one of the other things that we know here is that the show’s ratings are showing that they merit it. Over the past two weeks we’ve seen the drama top 1.2 million viewers, and these are the only times this season that it’s done that. You want some of your shows to be on the rise as you get to the end of the road and all signs are clearly pointing towards this happening here.
Beyond this, there are also some encouraging things to think about year to year. The ninth episode of Ray Donovan season 5 was extremely close to equal to the ninth episode of Ray Donovan season 4. In general, season 5 is down less than 10% from the fourth season of the show, and that is without the final episodes being calculated. (Based on the current positive trajectory there is reason to believe that the show is going to rise once more.)
If we’re being honest, we’re a little bit surprised that there hasn’t been a Ray Donovan season 6 renewal already. We’ve said at CarterMatt that this is one of the stronger seasons and to go along with that, there’s very little reason to think that anyone at Showtime is unsatisfied with its performance. This is a show that can be an anchor for the summer, and we do think that the network will better use it as a lead-in for some other shows in the future. For example, we wouldn’t be shocked to see Ray Donovan work to support I’m Dying Up Here, a show that despite its promise couldn’t get a whole lot of momentum running in the ratings.
In the end, Showtime doesn’t necessarily have to hurry to order more episodes; as long as they do so within the next month or two they’ll be fine. They do need to give the writers enough time to tell more stories; they have a little bit longer to go in regards to filming, given that the latest batch of episodes of the show is not going to air until we roll around to the summer at least (provided it returns and Showtime makes some of the same scheduling moves that they have in the past).
Rest assured we’ll continue to report on the show’s ratings the rest of the season; if that leads to a renewal we’re going to be more than thrilled in the end.

At the end of season five Ray follows Abby’s ghost off the building into the water and shows him drowning. Of course if there is a season 6 it will then open up with him still standing there. So for me if there is no renewal for 6 then he actually jumped to his death.
