Agents of SHIELD season 5 will bring back the Kree
According to a report coming in from ComicBook.com (courtesy of series star Clark Gregg) this alien race is going to be back for the latest batch of episodes, which makes some sense for a number of different reasons. For one, Gregg’s Coulson is out in space — and presumably, so could some other members of his team. Are the Kree responsible for putting them out there? He has a lot to owe the Kree, basically his entire second life, so seeing some of these interactions now could prove interesting.
There are also so many ties with the Kree elsewhere within the Marvel Cinematic Universe that bringing them in here allows the show to play more in that world. They played a part in Guardians of the Galaxy and will also apparently have a role to play in Captain Marvel, let alone whatever they end up doing on the show here.
The super-secretive way in which Agents of SHIELD season 5 is being promoted at the moment suggests, in one way or another, that the ABC series is really out to deliver some sort of big surprise. They need to, just as they do need to find some ways to keep building some more buzz into the show. We’re entering what is effectively a make-it-or-break-it season for the franchise when you think about it. The show’s coming on at a new timeslot, and judging from what we at CarterMatt reported recently, we’re not sure ABC was planning to even bring it back before Disney/Marvel stepped in. We’re confident that the quality will be there for the show, but we are slightly more uncertain/nervous in regards to its performance in the ratings.
Ultimately, we’ll probably find out this winter whether or not the new SHIELD sinks or swims. At least with the Kree we’ve got even more confidence that they are moving in the right direction.
