Doctor Who 2017 Christmas Special heading to movie theaters
Per Entertainment Weekly, the upcoming special “Twice Upon a Time” is going to be featured on Wednesday, December 27 at 7:00 p.m. local time (depending on your territory) across a number of different theaters through Fathom Events. This is far from the first time in which Doctor Who has seen a theatrical release for an episode or a special. While we wouldn’t call it commonplace necessarily, there is an awareness that this franchise works well in the big-screen format and that there are many fans who will pay money to go and watch the episode with a number of other like-minded fans in celebration of the show.
This special certainly has more of a reason than most to generate even more hype — just remember that “Twice Upon a Time” marks the final episode for both Peter Capaldi as The Doctor and Steven Moffat as the showrunner. Beyond that, this episode also marks the debut of Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor and Chris Chibnall as the new showrunner. (The first scene featuring Whittaker will be written by Chibnall, which enables him to get a jump on everything else that is coming.)
In a statement, Fathom Events VP of Programming Kymberli Frueh had the following to say:
“’Twice Upon a Time’ will mark the 16th cinema event we have presented in partnership with BBC Worldwide North America … Our Doctor Who events are the perfect opportunities for Whovians to meet up, giving them a chance to enjoy their favorite content together in a big screen setting.”
Meanwhile, Sergei Kuharsky, EVP Franchise and Digital Enterprises, BBC Worldwide North America, also added the following:
“The regeneration of the Doctor is a must see event for Doctor Who fans around the world … And who wouldn’t want to watch the historic emergence of Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor on the big screen?”
Obviously, some of these events with Doctor Who and Fathom Events are incredibly successful — after all, how else would you explain why they keep doing them? This show has a loyal enough audience to make it work and we feel like this upcoming special is arguably going to be the most notable once since maybe the 50th Anniversary Special that brought David Tennant and Matt Smith onto the screen at the same time.
Following this special, the upcoming 11th season of Doctor Who could air at some point in 2018.
