It has already been widely reported that Pearl Mackie is staging her fond farewell from Doctor Who with the Christmas Special. Yet, does that necessarily mean that her exit has to stick there for good? We know that the show is bringing in a new Companion for Jodie Whittaker (presumably Bradley Walsh), but this is one of those sort of things that you feel there is a certain degree of flux over. While Bradley may be the permanent new Companion, there’s always room for a cameo here and there! Mackie had a shorter run than many other Doctor Who stars over the years, so there is certainly a good chance still that the show will find a way to include her once more.
For the record, Pearl herself is letting it be known that she is certainty open to coming back to the series in the future, saying as much recently to the Radio Times in a new interview piece:
“One of the wonderful things about Doctor Who is that the world of possibilities is endless, so I guess, never say never…”
As for the Christmas Special itself, she also had nothing positive to say about it, given that there is going to be such an interesting spirit of excitement about it:
“There’s new beginnings – you’ve got new beginnings with [next Doctor] Jodie Whittaker – it’s a great adventure with two Doctors, it’s going to be very exciting, it’s going to be a lovely episode.”
This episode is going to feature David Bradley coming on board as William Hartnell’s first Doctor, a way in which to bring the end of Peter Capaldi’s time full-circle. It’s two Doctors near the end of their respective times in the world, trying to figure out their purpose and what the world means for them. Both of them are also in theory still doing what they can to prolong the inevitable, given that neither party wants to suffer or say goodbye to this role or the tremendous time in which they’ve had as the character.
What do you anticipate seeing when it comes to the Doctor Who Christmas Special, and the end of Pearl Mackie?
