Is Outlander season 4 work being done with Caitriona Balfe, cast?

Outlander season 4 work

Is Outlander season 4 work already underway in Scotland? It may not be getting a great deal of attention, but it seems to!

There are a few different pieces of evidence for this, starting with some of the posts on Twitter — Sam Heughan is back in Scotland via an extremely cheeky message, and show executive producer Maril Davis comments that Caitriona Balfe is “going to work today.” (Oh, and by the way, a wonderfully Happy Birthday to Balfe, the heart and soul of the show and fellow member of the October Birthday Club.) There are some other signs when you dig far enough into Twitter, but by and large you get the gist. Some early work on the fourth season is being done, which it will continue to be for much of the remainder of the year.

With production gearing up there are likely going to be some other assorted announcements to be made here and there, especially in the casting realm. (Rest assured that we’re aboard the Lou Diamond Phillips campaign train, having loved him on Longmire for many years.) We do think that Starz will treat this production a little bit differently than they did season 3. It was a little bit easier to share casting news and the like for that season, knowing that viewers were already caught up on the second season and could digest most of the casting news as it started to come in. It’s a little bit different here given the fact that we are right in the middle of the season 3 story — we haven’t made it to the Print Shop yet, let alone some of the other big scenes that will end up defining some of the latter portions of the story this year.

One of the reasons for filming starting this month is in hopes of the series being able to air again next fall — with that, we may not have another horribly long Droughtlander. This is one of the other reasons why it’s so important for Starz to continue to give advance renewals for additional seasons of the show. To us, it makes sense for them to renew the show for a fifth season before season 4 finishes filming, since the writers can start to look ahead to some of the other stories that they want to tell. The longer that they wait on it, the harder it will be to keep the same production cycle that they have going. (Given some of the series-record ratings the show keeps bringing to the table we have every reason to think that a renewal will be coming; there’s effectively no reason to be worried for now.)

Once there’s some more official Outlander season 4 work being done we’ll be sure to let you know. As a reminder we at CarterMatt don’t post unauthorized set photos, and we’re going to keep reporting on casting news to a minimum unless it’s officially confirmed.
