Sandra Oh not appearing on Grey’s Anatomy season 14 (alas)

Sandra Oh

Sandra Oh was great as Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomyso of course anyone would love to see her back!

Of course, there’s a big difference between wanting someone back on the show and then them actually turning up, and we’ve learned that time and time again over the years. We thought that Oh could’ve returned after the death of Derek on the show and that didn’t happen. Then, there was of course a hope that she would make an appearance for the upcoming 300th episode … but it doesn’t sound like that is going to happen, either.

After being asked that question recently by TVLine following Cristina being referenced at the start of the season, executive producer Krista Vernoff noted that it would’ve been great to have a cameo or something take place:

“That would be a fine occasion for a visit, but it’s not happening. So I don’t want people imagining or hoping it will and then being disappointed. Sandra may one day come back for the end [of the series] or something, but she’s not coming back this season.”

Oh has since gone on to do some other series projects since playing Cristina for many years and we definitely don’t get the sense that she is eager to return. It doesn’t appear as though there is any animosity between her and the series, but sometimes you just have a thirst to do something different for a while in your life. She’s already had the experience of being a part of this show and working some of the extremely long days in the hospital sets. At a certain point it’s good to have a little bit of distance from that.

In the event Cristina does return someday, she could absolutely contribute a lot to some of the story given how much has changed since she first left. For example, Meredith now has a new relationship with Riggs, and even if they’re not together right now there is still a hope that they could be in the future. Meanwhile, her ex Owen is now with Amelia, though these two also have some problems of their own in the wake of Amelia learning that she has a brain tumor. This is a significant story roadblock that the two are going to be forced to confront in the coming episodes. Hopefully, they will find a way to get through this and emerge on the other side.
