Grey’s Anatomy season 14 spoilers: Kevin McKidd on Owen, Amelia dilemma

Kevin McKidd

The Grey’s Anatomy season 14 two-hour premiere delivered on ABC a significant amount of crisis, especially for the Amelia character. She learned that she has a brain tumor, and for the immediate future she is going to have to do her part in order to battle this.

Yet, simultaneously there are some other hurdles that she is going to need to overcome, with one of the biggest ones being cluing in her husband. Owen doesn’t know. We do think that he would be caring and supportive if he did, but Amelia is going to need to find the place within her to say the truth. The last major conversation she had with him was telling him that she didn’t care about anything he does in his life effectively, and that was the precursor to the big Owen – Teddy kiss near the end of the episode. Teddy seems reluctant to push that further, and when Owen learns about the brain tumor, that may change the game in its own way.

No matter what happens from here on out, one thing does feel certain: This is a game-changer for the relationship, and we have a feeling that things between the two parties are going to change in a big way for some time to come. This is something Kevin McKidd speaks more about to Deadline in a recent postmortem interview:

“Amelia had this tumor go undiagnosed and it’s been affecting her choices and her personality. She probably had it when she asked Owen to marry her. When you roll the videotape back however many years, she asks, ‘Who have I been?’ and Owen asks the same emotions. It’s interesting to see where they end up. The tumor changes the game.”

This tumor could leave Caterina Scorsone’s character question her feelings and almost everything about; meanwhile, it may make Owen feel a sense of guilt for not assessing or diagnosing some of the symptoms before. He’s going to need to get past that and figure out a way of being there for her. He’s a very good doctor, but that does not make him immune to beating himself up in the event he does get something wrong in a diagnosis.
