Saturday Night Live character David S. Pumpkins gets Halloween Special

David S. Pumpkins

Happy Halloween … any questions? We don’t have any, now that we know David S. Pumpkins is getting his moment in the sun.

On Thursday, it was announced that the super-popular Saturday Night Live character, who first turned up last fall in the Tom Hanks episode (he later made a cameo as David S. “Pimpkins”), is going to be the subject of his own animated Halloween special. This will air on Saturday, October 28 at 11:30 p.m. Eastern (SNL will be in repeats at that time) and the show is going to feature Hanks voicing the title character. Meanwhile, some other important people in the sketch, including Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan (who recently departed the show), are going to return to play their parts. Writer Streeter Seidell is going to join the two along with … Peter Dinklage? Yes, we don’t quite get that one but we’re more than happy to see that the Game of Thrones actor is going to play some sort of role. (He has hosted the show himself in the past.)

The premise for this special is pretty simple: Pumpkins is going to work along with his two skeleton friends to teach the meaning of Halloween to a young boy and his sister. We have zero idea how this is going to work, given how the initial premise of the original sketch was that Pumpkins made no sense in a Halloween haunted-elevator ride because he wasn’t scary. His whole shtick was basically dancing with his skeletons and saying “any questions?” over and over. It was hilarious, though, especially as it progressed and the entire ride became an excuse in order to promote the character more.

Hopefully this gig gives Hanks another reason to come back to host SNL in the future. While this past appearance was hardly the first time that he’s taken on the gig, it may have been his most noteworthy appearance. He’s consistently funny, game for almost anything, and he can take on just about any genre and style. He’s one of those enviable actors who seems to have it all — comedic chops, dramatic ability, and the gift of being able to turn the craft off and act like a normal person after the fact. You can see the full video of the original sketch below, provided that you have not already.

Just in case David S. Pumpkins doesn’t get you excited enough…

New episodes of Saturday Night Live are starting to air this weekend! The host for the show is going to be Ryan Gosling, and we recommend here at CarterMatt clicking here and seeing the full promo for the episode. It’s a funny one.
