There’s no question that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life — which can be interpreted as the eighth season of the show despite it being four feature-length installments — was an enormous success on Netflix. It brought tons of attention and subscribers to the platform, and it was clear that there was an interest in exploring the story of Rory and Lorelai after the fact.
In the aftermath of this and the famous four words, there are still many questions regarding the show’s future — what you should know is that in the event creator Amy Sherman-Palladino wants to do more, there is an opportunity for her to have her cake and eat it to. According to a report from TVLine, the deal that Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino have with Amazon (where they are working on new series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will allow them to pursue more Gilmore Girls in the future provided that they want to do more. If they’ve got an idea, they can always go back to Netflix — and we would assume that they would be ready to take that on in a heartbeat.
When it comes to whether or not we think that a Gilmore Girls season 9 renewal is going to happen anytime soon … nope. Don’t count on it. We do think that if the story is right, Alexis Biedel and Lauren Graham would be willing to come back. There is just only so many hours in the day and with that, it has to be the right time and the right continuation of the story. Biedel was just made into a regular on The Handmaid’s Tale, and given this show’s prestige she will be rather busy with that for a long time to come.
If we had to guess, this could be a subject to revisit next summer, and maybe if we’re lucky something could come together either in late 2019 or early 2020 … if it at all. Just be grateful that we do now live in a world where these sorts of opportunities are afforded shows that were previously off the air. We never imagined that A Year in the Life would exist much in the way that it was a total shock that we ever had a chance to get more The X-Files. For the most part, all we feel is gratitude that so many great shows are getting a chance to continue. We’ll be patient with this and see what transpires a little further on down the road, but for the time being, we’re hopeful. If there was no intentional of more Gilmore Girls, why include a provision in the Amazon deal in the first place?
