Empire season 4 episode 3 spoilers: Prepare for Cookie flashbacks
What’s the difference between the two? Well, in one case it has very much to do with the fact that Cookie is doing it as a result of an event that happens to her; she doesn’t necessarily want to flash back to that era, but she still finds herself in a position where that is on her mind. Meanwhile, for Lucious he’s just trying his best to figure out who he is now. His amnesia is going to carry through at least the first three episodes, and the other characters will frustrate him courtesy of their refusal to tell him the truth about the person that he was prior to losing said memory. Why would they want to? This is the fascinating thing about where the story stands at the moment. Once you strip away some of the trauma and the abuse from Lucious Lyon you have a better person. Nobody in his family should want to see the terrible side of the character could out again, and hearing about his dark past could be a trigger.
If you want to know more specifics, the Empire season 4 episode 3 synopsis provides them courtesy of the fine folks over at the network:
“When Cookie is denied a line of credit, she flashes back to her years in prison and compares her past struggles to her life now. Lucious continues to struggle with demons of his own and begs his family to tell him about the ways he’s wronged them, but they are reluctant to tell him the truth. Meanwhile, the NYPD is still on Andre’s case about the events that transpired in Vegas and one officer in particular catches his eye in the all-new “Evil Manners” episode of EMPIRE airing Wednesday, Oct. 11 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (EMP-403)”
This version of Lucious wants to be a good person, but it’s hard to atone for some of your wrongs when you don’t quite know what these said wrongs are. Meanwhile, the rest of the family is trying to milk this side of Terrence Howard’s character for all they can, knowing that it is likely only so long before he starts to get his memory back. This is the ultimate paradox of this situation, given that everyone is thinking selfishly. At some point the roads will come together; the larger question there is precisely when that will be.
