For everyone out there who loved Sam Waterston on Law & Order: SVU, this has to be great news: You’re going to get a chance to see him again!

NBC confirmed on Wednesday that Waterston is going to come back to SVU in the role of his former Law & Order role of Jack McCoy at some point this midseason. (Executive producer Julie Martin first confirmed this news to reporters.) McCoy was a part of the flagship series for the majority of its run, and in addition to playing this character there, he also appeared in a few episodes of SVU over the course of its history, as well.

Anytime that you can bring on board a flagship character onto this show, you have to consider it a big deal. This is especially true when you consider that you’ve got another character on the show already with ties to the original: Philip Winchester’s Peter Stone, the son of Ben Stone. He is coming over after spending last year over on Chicago Justice.

What do we think about this move? It’s fantastic for all old-school fans of the series, mostly because of the fact that there are so many people out there who do have nostalgia for the original show. We know that we here at CarterMatt feel largely the same way, mostly because this is a show that has done a great deal of great stuff over time when it comes to preserving the Law & Order brand. While times have changed, we do feel that there are still many attempts being made constantly to keep the legacy of that original show alive. Whether it be in terms of the show’s structure or the way that the drama is cultivated, it feels very much familiar in all the best ways.

New episodes of Law & Order: SVU season 19 will kick off airing later this fall. If you don’t remember Waterston from his role on the original Law & Order, you may remember him well from his time on HBO’s The Newsroom or his current run on Netflix’s Grace & Frankie. Over the course of his career, what we’ve clearly seen is that this is a man who does have a history of doing some rather great things in a wide array of different venues.

Now that we’re getting that is effectively a crossover and a callback to the original show, one of the other things that we’re wondering is if it’s going to be possible for there to be another crossover later this season … we’re especially all about one between this show and the One Chicago franchise.
