MasterChef season 9 renewal odds, premiere date speculation for Fox
The reason why there hasn’t been much in the way of renewal/cancellation speculation with this show over the past few months is rather simple: It’s clear that Fox has zero plans to cancel the show, and with that, we can just look towards the future and feel good that it’s going to be coming back down the road. They’ll announce the renewal officially whenever they want and continue to make this show alongside MasterChef Junior and whatever else they want. (For the record, we’d still love a condensed Celebrity MasterChef that is more like the original show in format.)
We will note here that the ratings for MasterChef season 8 are down a little over 10% versus season 7. This year’s new episodes brought in around a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, whereas the ratings from season 7 were closer to a 1.3. That season was down about 14% from season 6, which is when the show averaged around a 1.5. The fifth season averaged a 1.9 rating, and the fourth season brought in a 2.3. The third season fared slightly better than that, but that’s about as far back as we can go with some of these numbers. The trend here is clear: The show’s slowly lost a chunk of viewership over the years, and we just feel like a natural decline in the franchise’s popularity is a big part of it. The show hasn’t done anything wrong per se, but the format rarely changes and we could see some viewers thinking that if they’ve seen one or two seasons, they’ve probably seen them all. We don’t agree (you’re missing out on a lot of entertainment by thinking that way), but this is really one of those situations that is really a matter of opinion.
The likely MasterChef season 9 premiere date on Fox is probably going to be next summer, and if there is one thing that the show should be doing to shake things up, we’d say it is to get rid of some of the “replicate this dish” challenge or at least add a little more creativity in there. Also, the team challenges where you care for a horde of people have grown a little tired since they really are the same thing every single team. We don’t think that the series needs any big changes, especially given that it’s really about the food, the judges, and the stories of the home cooks, but it should look at how to modernize things and get people more active and engaged in 2017. As of right now, this is the sort of show that, while fun, there’s no pressure to watch live. You can store MasterChef on your DVR and come back to it on a rainy day.
Do you think that a MasterChef season 9 renewal is practically assured?
