Once Upon a Time season 7 spoilers: The mysterious new Alice

Once Upon a Time season 7 is going to feature a new Alice after the previous one was in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. What is this one going to bring to the table? For the time being, this feels very much like a mystery — and one that the powers that be at ABC seem more than fine to keep for a little while longer.

Speaking in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Edward Kitsis notes that seeing this version of the character will intentionally look and feel rather different than the one that came before:

“Alice is a character in the vein of Rumplestiltskin in that you don’t really quite know what she’s up to, where she’s going or where she’s been.”

If you do enjoy Once Upon a Time when they shroud some of their characters in a heavy layer of mystery, odds are that you will very much appreciate this. We do like it just because it’s not often that we get a female character who hides their intentions this much. Is it possible that Kitsis and the writers / producers could make their Alice into a villain? We don’t know who is responsible for casting the new curse, and with that, you do have to wonder if she could be a possible candidate for it. Yet, at the moment Lady Tremaine (Gabrielle Anwar) is the person we’re looking towards more than anyone else, and it would be a big reach for the show to suddenly bust out a bad version of a character who has been nothing other than jovial and curious for most of her existence in the Disney canon.

Also, over time we have gotten a sense that ABC and Once Upon a Time have tried to shift characters around so that they feel closer to their Disney counterparts than they did in the early going. Remember how distinct the original Cinderella was on the show? That’s just one of many examples, but whether it be with Hades or with some of the Frozen characters on the show we’ve started to see more straight-up recreations rather than creative adaptations. Maybe the new Alice is just a way to throw us off. We would welcome it here at CarterMatt just for the sake of allowing us to have more exciting mysteries to write about.
