Will The Night Shift season 5 renewal happen? Looking at the odds
The biggest reason for optimism is this: The fine folks over at the network do seem reasonably fond of the show. It’s been handed four seasons to date, and while you can understandably quibble about their promotion or the timeslot, four seasons is a lot for a network show these days. They’ve given The Night Shift some chances, and they may choose to give it one more. One of the cool things about the show is that there are a ton of different options for what the network could do with it. If you find a strong lead-in and get the show on the air at a good timeslot, the ratings could go up!
Well, that does bring up to the next key order of business: The ratings. The fourth season as a whole generated on average a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is good compared to many other summer scripted shows. However, this is a decline of just over 30% from the season 3 averages. One of the reasons for that is probably because the third season had a much better lead-in, and it also didn’t have to deal with NFL preseason anywhere near as much. This is a major factor in what’s happened the show the past few weeks — it’s hard to generate big ratings when NBC affiliates are preempting the show in select markets for games. Compare about this all you want, but this is really a matter of what the network wants. They’re not changing that.
The show’s season 5 future is probably going to be solidified a little bit later this fall. Last year, the renewal came about in the middle of November. That’s around when The Night Shift season 5 renewal could happen provided that the powers that be at NBC want there to be some stories in place for the summer, and to bring so many of the cast members back. We just hope that they take into consideration everything from the lead-in to the preemptions to the strong storytelling in making the decision. When it comes to originality, one of the biggest things that we can say here is that even though there are medical dramas across the board, few honor and focus on the military anywhere near the same that this one does. It’s exciting, and based on where we are right now there are many interesting directions that the show could go.
