The Blacklist season 5 art places James Spader, Megan Boone front and center

NBC has released the first The Blacklist season 5 art, and we’ve got one immediate word that we’d use in order to describe it: Awesome.

With this art, it is pretty clear that the folks over at the network have decided to keep things simple, but the end result is arguably our favorite one that we’ve seen from the show through five seasons. You’ve got James Spader and Megan Boone front and center, so that checks off the box of the show using its two starts to market it properly. Beyond that, you’ve got the familiar black-and-red color scheme, which does give the show the feel of a graphic novel or even a noir. The black-and-white faces accent that perfectly.

Beyond just all of this, the two words “Family. Business.” speak volumes in terms of the effect that NBC is trying to achieve with this image. This slogan harkens back to the season 4 finale, where it was finally revealed that Reddington (Spader) is the father of Liz Keen (Boone) after years of speculation. While we’ve certainly written plenty of theories about possible imposters and whether or not this Reddington is the same Reddington who supplied the DNA, for now we’ll take the show at its word, knowing that there is the capacity for some more fantastic twists in the future.

“Family business” is of course a common phrase, but the irony here is that Reddington and Liz have never fully worked together with clarity in terms of their relationship. The season 5 premiere could be the first time during their entire collaboration that she has known the truth about who her father truly is. That’s a strange thing to think about, but he’s clearly worked hard to keep that secret under wraps. We feel like in the early days this secret being in the open could serve as a benefit to both characters — and it could, given that it allows them to explore more in the way of emotional avenues. One of the difficulties, on the other hand, is likely going to be seeing how the two recover from what is another devastating secret: The suitcase. Whatever is in there is something that Reddington cares even more about than being Liz’s father. That’s something that could be revealed in the first few episodes of the season … with the emphasis on the word “could.” This is The Blacklist. With that, you never want to anticipate anything as certainty.

With this mystery also comes Tom, who is currently in possession of the suitcase. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Ryan Eggold will be coming back as a series regular following his time on The Blacklist: Redemption.
