When Ray Donovan season 5 episode 4 airs on Showtime, you better be prepared for some emotional moments. After all, this will be the story about Ray and Abby in the wake of her diagnosis.
Much of the story this season has been told as though you’re viewing Ray through a time capsule of his life, and this episode will do that in its own way. You will learn in this episode more about his emotional process coming to terms with the news, while also doing what he could to try and fight to make sure that she is going to be okay. You’re going to see him having a heated conversation with one of her doctors, an unfortunate conversation that probably so many other loved ones of patients have had in the past. He wants answers, and beyond that he also wants something to cling to cling to. He wants hope in what is becoming increasingly a very hopeless world for him.
Eventually, one of the biggest pieces of advice the doctors give him is to merely do his part to enjoy some of the final stretch of time that he has with her, whether it be going on a vacation or having some family time close by. These are things that Ray will bring up to her in this episode, while also encouraging her to fight.
What is so interesting about this story is that there may be some attempts through all of this to show light in the midst of darkness. Ray has never been the best husband, just as he has never been the best father. Yet, he is trying to show through some of his actions now a capacity to change and be better, and that he is capable of so much more than what he has shown. Hearing the truth about Abby’s condition is enough to make him question some of his past actions, while helping him realize how to have a better future with her.
You’ll see Ray contemplate so much in this episode, but the reality here is still the reality: Abby is gone, and there is no way to bring her back.
