American Horror Story: Cult spoilers: Evan Peters, Lena Dunham roles revealed

Evan Peters

Weeks ago, American Horror Story: Cult executive producer Ryan Murphy noted that we would see the biggest role in years for Evan Peters on the show. Well, it just so turns out that he really should’ve said “roles” all things considered.

Tonight, Murphy confirmed while at a screening for the opening episodes of the season that Peters is going to be playing a wide array of cult leaders from different periods of history. Charles Manson, David Koresh, Jim Jones, Andy Warhol, and even a modern-day Michigan man with blue hair — this is the guy that you’ve seen in the trailer for the season.

Meanwhile, Murphy also confirmed the casting for Lena Dunham. The former Girls star, who was certainly a controversial addition for many people out there, is going to be playing famed female cult leader Valerie Solanas. Here’s a little bit more (via TVLine) of what Murphy had to say on that subject:

“Throughout the season, [Peters is] playing six different cult leaders: Kai, Manson, David Koresh, Andy Warhol, Jim Jones — that’s a big one. We really examine how those people rise to power. … They really are idiots. … Lena is doing an episode called ‘Valerie Solanas Died For Your Sins, Scum Bag.’ That episode is about female rage then and in the country now. Valerie Solanas created a thing called the SCUM Manifesto in which she told all women to kill all men [in order to achieve equal power.] We also examine our female characters as they’re trying to figure out a way they can have equal power within this cult that Kai (the present-day Peters) has created.”

The rest of the cast for this season includes Allison Pill, Sarah Paulson, Cheyenne Jackson, Billie Lourd, and many more. Overall, it does have the potential to be one of the more intriguing batches of episodes that we’ve seen the FX show create. We absolutely know at the moment that it could end up being super-political, given that there are quite a few cults that exist within the present day at the moment.

The biggest question that we have about the show right now is fairly simple: Is it trying to take on too much for its own good? Is it going to languish many weeks in? The thing about this franchise is that it’s known for getting off to really strong starts, only to sputter a little bit after the fact. It needs to pay off many of its stories, and that could prove challenging at times when you have Peters doing so many different things and taking on so many different roles. The good news is that he’s capable of pulling it off; here’s to hoping that the same can be said for the show itself.
