Supergirl season 3 spoilers: What’s ahead for Lena, Kara?

Supergirl

One of the unexpected joys of Supergirl season 2 was getting to see the Lena Luthor – Kara Danvers friendship blossom. There was some understandable nervousness thanks to Lena’s last name and family history, but Kara’s shown time and time again that she doesn’t judge a book by its cover, or a person by their heritage. There are still some moments here and there where you wonder if we’re going to see Lena break bad, but we haven’t seen it yet. She fought against her mother, and proved useful for Supergirl many times over.

So where does their relationship go now moving into season 3? Based on what executive producer Andrew Kreisberg tells Entertainment Weekly, there are going to be some great moments ahead — but also some where doubt will creep in:

“Lena and Kara’s friendship will continue to grow … There’s a lot of Lena-Kara adventures early on in this season. The most interesting thing about Lena is that she is so good, and so moral, and believes in second chances, but she comes from this family of truly evil people. As people are going to realize over the course of this season, it doesn’t take much to make you bad. People don’t just turn evil. They do one small bad thing and then that leads to another, and then to another, and so any time you’re watching Lena, you’re always wondering, ‘Is this the moment when she does the one small thing?’”

There are going to be more than likely several opportunities for the friendship to be tested, especially since Kara’s going to have some struggles in the early days of the season. How is losing Mon-El going to impact her personal life as Kara Danvers? She seems almost regretful of every having a personal life at all, and if she tries to abandon it, you also have to wonder if her relationship with Lena is also going to be thrown by the wayside.

Meanwhile, another key question here is how the presence of Reign as a Big Bad is going to impact all of the different relationships on the show. It’s too early to tell how she manifests herself in National City, but given her appetite for destruction, it wouldn’t surprise us if her or someone close to her tried to sever every tie that Kara / Supergirl had for the purpose of maximum destruction. There could also be some other forces that pull at Lena over time — we’ve already suggested that there could be some entertainment that comes out who else turns up this season. We’ve already made our thoughts clear that it would be very interesting to see an appearance from Lex Luthor in the present. So far, we’ve mostly seen the character in the past.
