Here’s something that we never saw coming on The Fosters season 5 episode 5: The neighbors wanting to dine with Stef and Lena again.
The last time that the parties all got together for a meal, it was awkward — or, shall we say, awkward. It was uncomfortable enough that it’s worth throwing that added emphasis in there. Stef’s history with one of them made the entire encounter strange, mostly because there wasn’t all that much that she had told Lena about her past. It brought up a time in her life that felt foreign, and there are some flashbacks that you really don’t need to have in your life. This, at least in the moment, certainly felt like one of them.
So why have the neighbors come back now and as Stef and Lena over for dinner? We wonder that especially the moment that they mention Kobe steaks, which are the sort of thing that we would hide and not want to share because they are SO DELICIOUS. Is it possible that this woman is still holding some sort of candle for Stef? Maybe, or maybe their son has an interest in Mariana since it’s very much clear that she has some sort of interest in him. The irony in all of this is that his interest in athletics is one of the reasons why they aren’t looking at Anchor Beach, and that in turn is one of the reasons for awkwardness between this family and the Adams-Foster clan.
If nothing else, at least know that there’s something nice about having a domestically-based story like this given just how much chaos exists elsewhere on the show at the moment. Almost in general, we’re pleased that the show is spending more of its time dealing with low-key storylines right now after having life-and-death circumstances at the start of the season. There’s only so long in which you can emphasize these without things feeling like an exaggerated reality — it’s nice to have some characters getting involved in relationships, school, or causes that hit close to him.
What else to expect?
After getting off to a slow start this season, we’re starting to see things pick up ever so slightly for Brandon now. His relationship with Grace is still new, but they do have a lot going for them; yet, there’s the Cortney question still floating around out there. With him finding more ways to help her and Mason, is he really over her at all? Is this a situation that we’re going to be seeing Brandon at the center of for a while still on the show?
