Ray Donovan season 5 episode 2 spoilers: Flashbacks and ‘Las Vegas’
Ray Donovan season 5 episode 2 synopsis – “A flashback to Ray and Abby’s 21st anniversary when they went to Las Vegas to see Damon’s first televised fight. In the present, movie star Natalie James hires Ray to protect her from an abusive husband/manager, which draws him deeper into Sam Winslow’s web. Hopes for a beautiful day are dashed at Terry and Maureen’s wedding as tensions flare between the Donovans and the Dohertys.”
Why go back to Ray and Abby’s big anniversary now? We like to think that much of that is all about trying to see the mechanics of their relationship during different times. Not only that, but this was also them celebrating an iconic moment for Damon.
In getting back to the present, Lilli Simmons as James is going to be a huge part of this season. She’s got a significant amount to lose because of who she is: She’s the star of a huge film franchise, and if something happens to her either professionally or personally, it’s hard to come back from that. Obviously, this is where Ray enters the picture, but we have a feeling that her struggles will prove different from some of the ones that he’s encountered through the season so far. This season in general is going to be marked by a number of different things, including hope for the future and pain from the past. We have to assume that Ray probably feels as though he is a very different and very evolved person after everything that he’s been through. Is that really the case, however? That’s a big part of what this season is going to test for him as he’s confronted with problems old and new.
One thing that we know for sure he hasn’t encountered: Susan Sarandon’s Sam Winslow. She is a force of nature completely different than any he has encountered.

If you head over here, you can see the video preview for this episode, one that makes it clear that Ray and Abby’s anniversary trip was a little more complicated than the synopsis indicates — it may have involved a visit to a brothel — and that Terry and Mureen’s wedding is not necessarily going to be a happy occasion at all. Instead, there’s going to be some chaos that goes down.
