Poldark season 3 episode 9: Eleanor Tomlinson on Demelza’s debate

Poldark season 3 episode 9

With Poldark season 3 episode 9, otherwise known as the final episode of the year, airing August 6, there’s room for many debates. That is especially true when it comes to Eleanor Tomlinson and her character of Demelza. She has a great love of her life close by in Ross, but she also has someone new in Hugh Armitage who shows a genuine interest in her. He writers her poetry, pays her attention, and effectively treats her differently than anyone else has. There is something appealing about that, but she continues to struggle with the notion of faithfulness and being the best person that she can possibly be.

So what does Tomlinson have to say leading into this episode about her character’s romantic struggle? Speaking on that subject to the Radio Times in a new interview, she does her part to explain that all the more:

“Demelza loves Ross, but she doesn’t need him to the extent that she once did and I think that this relationship with Hugh comes out of someone paying her attention, someone highlighting her worth, while she’s being ignored by Ross.

“She wears her heart on her sleeve and she is very true and very honest to Ross and I think it’s lovely. That’s what’s nice about her, she doesn’t conform to a society where women behaved themselves and were very much under their husbands’ thumbs. Demelza speaks her mind.”

Demelza has already spoke her mind to Ross regarding some of her feelings that lie elsewhere and her starting to drift away, but we don’t think that he was in much of a position at all to listen. He isolates some of his own feelings from her, and as a result of that, does not put himself in a position here he is able to deal with what she is going through. He buries his guilt and ignores some of the problems right in front of his eyes. Ross is flawed — we do think that he cares for others and has a genuine conscience, but he struggles and we have to imagine that he is going to continue to do so.

For those of you who do root for Ross and Demelza, let’s hope that this episode (and this entire situation with Armitage) proves to be somewhat of a wake-up call, and gets Ross more into a position where he starts to become more aware of just how his wife is feeling and coping with some of thee issues.
