Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Ellen Pompeo, cast filming in Seattle

Ellen Pompeo

While Grey’s Anatomy may film in Los Angeles, it looks like Ellen Pompeo and the cast are trying to make things as authentic to Seattle as possible.

In a new series of posts on social media, everyone from Pompeo to Kevin McKidd to Jason George has confirmed in various forms that they’re in the Emerald City doing a little bit of work. We’ve also received some confirmation that Debbie Allen is directing the premiere, which shouldn’t come as much of a shock given her talent and her history of taking on big episodes. (Allen also plays Catherine Avery on the show and is an executive producer.)

So what exactly is the cast doing in the city? It’s a little too easy to apparently say that they are just filming the premiere; some scenes from Seattle may be used there, but others are being saved down the road. Per Entertainment Weekly, the show is mostly there to get some exterior footage with some of the cast members that it can use throughout the season. This helps to make it seem like the cast is actually in Seattle all the time, and it makes them seem a little less like vampires who spend all of their time either at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital or their respective homes. If they save some of it, they can have a real treasure trove of scenes to go back to whenever they see fit. That is very much useful for a show like this.

This week is far from the first time that we’ve seen Grey’s Anatomy cast members film in Seattle, and depending on how long the show lasts, it probably won’t be the last time. One of the things that we do know with some confidence is that the ratings on ABC are such that it could go on however long Shonda Rhimes and the cast want it to. It’s still dominant on Thursday nights, and it’s also still cultivating some great stuff. We have a big cliffhanger entering the premiere regarding Owen’s sister Megan, and we’re waiting to see how that is resolved. Whatever happens here influences a lot of different characters, whether it be Owen, Amelia, Nathan, and by extension Meredith. We’re also going to be seeing Kim Raver back on the show as Teddy for the first time in years.
