Steven Moffat Dracula series will have no impact on Sherlock season 5
Yet, the main issue here is timing and trying to get everyone together — as it’s always been. Also, we feel like Moffat is going to turn into Rip Van Winkle in between now and when the Doctor Who Christmas Special airs later this year. After so many years of non-stop work, this man deserves a break probably more so than anyone to relax and pontificate over his legacy.
Beyond these series, what we know is there is another project that is going to be in the works for Moffat, Gatiss, and fellow Sherlock executive producer Sue Vertue: Dracula. There are many other forms of the Bram Stoker material out there, but given the history of this trio, we imagine that things will alternate between being emotional, powerful, and imaginative. There may be some humor and charm decorated here and there. It will be a unique take on the property.
As a part of a lengthy interview with Deadline, one that also includes a further discussion on Doctor Who and the show’s legacy, Moffat had the following to say on Dracula as a series:
“It’s far too early for us to say anything outside of the tiny little circle of me and Mark and Sue about how we’re going to handle it, but I think we’ve got good ideas. We’ve discussed what we think are the key things that should be done with Dracula, but I don’t think we’ll be sitting down for a few months yet to actually start hammering that out. We’re just putting a flag on it and saying we’re going to do it really, but I think we’re on to something.”
Based on what Moffat is currently planning, it does not seem as though there will be a conflict between Dracula and any future Sherlock season 5. Basically, he can write the new series and work on it with Gatiss and Vertue at his own pace; when it looks as though the pieces could be coming together in terms of more Sherlock, including getting on board the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, maybe the three will all prepare the future of the series at that point.
We’ll of course keep you updated in the interim, but we advise you that patience is going to be both required and also necessary.
Further Sherlock discussion
As we mentioned, you can head over to the link here in the event that you do want to retrieve some further discussion about the show per a separate panel at Comic-Con earlier this season. (Photo: BBC One.)
