Beyond Grey’s Anatomy season 14, what is the series’ lifespan?

Grey's Anatomy season 14

Entering Grey’s Anatomy season 14, we continue to see the ABC series in an interesting, exciting place. After all, it’s still the most-watched and most-popular scripted drama on the network … and it’s been on the air for almost 15 years. Think about it — we’re almost at the point now where someone could have been born after the premiere of the show and be well on their way to a driver’s license. That’s going to feel even weirder if we get to the point where they are old enough to vote.

After all, right now there’s no clear indicator that Grey’s Anatomy is ending anytime soon. It actually felt more like the future was in jeopardy a couple of years ago, back when there was contract drama and questions as to if Patrick Dempsey would be coming back. (Well, we know about that now, right?) Ellen Pompeo is locked in for this fall, she seems happy, and the remainder of the cast may feel the same way. There’s money for all parties involved to be made, and there is also a great deal of creative fulfillment that goes along with being a part of the show. While it may be a medical drama and there is a certain procedural element to that, there is also a chance to tell powerful, relevant stories at the same time.

We honestly do think that this is one of the shows that could go on for as long as the parties involved want it to.

So, is there any other challenge that is standing in the way for the series? We do think that Shonda Rhimes and the writers / producers should exercise caution with the firefighter spin-off, given that there can be too much of a good thing and over-saturation. If you integrate that too much into the main show, there is a fear that viewers will think “why do I have to watch both shows” and they may bail out of frustration. The one thing that could counteract this is simply that the spin-off is probably not going to air on ABC until the 2018-19 season, and after that, Scandal will be done. It could easily end up replacing the Kerry Washington series on the schedule Thursday nights. That, at least to us, seems lest the best of all worlds coming together.

Season 14 of Grey’s Anatomy will premiering on ABC at some point this fall. When it does come back, hopefully the show won’t waste a whole lot of time before answering some big questions in regards to Megan.

What do you think: How long will Grey’s Anatomy stay on the air, and how long should it be? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
