Only thirty minutes into the broadcast, Heidi Klum opted to press her golden buzzer for the young singer following her performance of “I’ll Stand By You,” and this does mark an interesting statistic: There have been eight golden buzzers from the judges in the Simon Cowell era, and all eight of them have had a singing component to them. Even Darci Lynne, whose trade is a ventriloquist, also ended up singing for the majority of her act.
Why is it that singers are so great for these moments? A big part of that is that it’s so easy to connect with vocalists emotionally, especially when they are young performers with big hearts and dreams. They appreciate this moment and it makes for fantastic television. It’s no coincidence that three of the singers moving forward with a golden buzzer this season are also kids. We don’t think that there is necessarily a direct correlation at all between golden buzzer recipients necessarily being the winner of the show, so those of you complaining about singers getting too many golden buzzers can remember that in some ways, it’s almost arbitrary.
Now, in terms of talent, Angelina’s brilliant. She’s got a powerful story that obviously comes from going through a lot at a young age, but beyond that she’s also got a big voice, a great ability to emotionally connect, and she’s still at an age where there is a lot that she can still learn moving forward.
So how will she do for the rest of the season?
As of right now, we feel fairly confident that she will make it fairly far given that most singers do, but what she needs to do next is take on a song that is a little more current and also allows her to have more fun out there. After all, she just turned thirteen! Embrace that and have a little bit of fun; with that, there’s a reasonably good shot that she is memorable both on this show and beyond that, given that this is really the goal for any singer who gets to be a part of this show.
