Megyn Kelly – Alex Jones NBC interview accomplishes nothing
After looking at the reactions to it on social media, it’s clear that this was nothing but an utter failure by Kelly to put him on the air. There are people on social media claiming that they like Jones more significantly than they did before. Why is that? It’s not because of his beliefs; instead, it’s because of their disdain for Megyn Kelly. Basically, there are some people out there who are willing to stand by a hoax-creator just because of their disdain for a broadcaster. Maybe it’s because of sexism, or because they don’t like her critiques of Donald Trump both during the campaign and then after the fact.
The scary truth of this interview remains the same: There are people online this weekend being less-than-terrible about Alex Jones. That is enough to put the interview in the loss column. Sure, there are also praising Kelly for her journalism and for bringing his beliefs to light, but odds are, these people all hated Jones before the interview even started. the odds of any one of his supporters being convinced to ditch him because of this interview feel astronomically low.
During the show tonight, both Kelly and Tom Brokow both decided to defend the choice to speak with Jones, saying that the connections between InfoWars and the White House were enough for him to be thought of as a series part of the present-day zeitgeist. Yet, that doesn’t mean that you have to talk to him. There is a reason why an NBC affiliate in Connecticut decided against airing the broadcast, and it’s due to their own desire to defend those who were lost at Sandy Hook. Giving him airtime, even if it is negative airtime, may still feel like enabling him more than some people would like.
Sometimes, the best thing that you can do is ignore a problem and hope that it goes away. Since Jones relies on hatred for much of his platform, giving him more only fuels his fire.
