How Mexico Tourism could factor into Bachelor in Paradise cancellation

There are already a lot of reports out there regarding the Bachelor in Paradise incident that led to the show stopping production, and across the board details are somewhat conflicting. What is known is that there were two contestants (read more here) who got into a sexual situation fueled by alcohol, and what happened between them was serious enough to lead to legal threats by a producer and allegations of misconduct. An investigation is underway, and speculating on it too much simply seems to be appropriate.

The focus of this article is more about the future of the series itself, and how the cancellation of the entire franchise could be at stake because of a source you may not think about at first: Mexico Tourism. As a source tells People Magazine, they are one of the reasons why the show is so financially viable in the first place:

“…The main reason it will likely not be back is that the majority of the bill for the show is footed by the Mexico Tourism Board. They pick up the tab for practically everything in exchange for all the free publicity the show gives them — but is not a good look and is not likely to be something Mexico Tourism wants to welcome back.”

This is also one of the reasons why The Bachelor / The Bachelorette are able to travel to so many exotic locations — they always present them in a beautiful, romantic light, which makes people want to go there for their own locations. Given that this is a show that is always towing the line of controversy to begin with, this may be the breaking point that keeps them from getting another invite.

Could production happen without the show being in Mexico in the future? Sure, but there would either need to be another tourism board willing to help out, or Bachelor in Paradise would have to turn into some other show that is just set in the greater Los Angeles area where so many of the cast and crew members are already located to save some money.

For now, the most important thing is getting to the bottom of what actually happened, and then making sure that everyone is properly cared for. At that point, the show’s future can be further assessed. (Photo: ABC.)
