Outlander season 3: The home stretch; when will filming end?

will filming endWhen will filming end for Outlander season 3? The Starz series is definitely now in the home stretch, with production still going in South Africa. Yet, the light is now blinking at the end of the tunnel.

As of right now, production should be about two weeks away from wrapping up. This is according to a message Sam Heughan posted on Facebook a week ago, saying that there were three more weeks to go for filming at that time. Filming is actually going a little later into June than we first thought, but this still means that there will be a good two and a half months (at least) between the end of filming and then the start of season 3 on Starz. The premiere date is something that will hopefully be revealed in the weeks to come, possibly even at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

To give you a further sense of how we’re in the home stretch, executive producer Maril Davis is also now back in the Cape Town area (see below), and some actors, as previously reported, have already completed filming. Everyone is now bracing to say farewell, wrap the final scenes, and then move on to hiatus.

When filming does end, we do expect some sort of grand send-off and celebration given that this was a lengthy production process, one that spanned several countries and started off all the way back in the late summer. With a few breaks here and there, filming’s been going on for a good nine months — that’s a long time for a show with a 13-episode season (many 22-episode shows film within that same span), and that speaks significantly to the amount of ambition and attention to detail that Davis, Matthew B. Roberts, and the rest of the team put into making this show a success. The cast and crew can celebrate the end, take a deep breath, do some summer projects (we’ve already reported on what Heughan has coming around the bend), and then head back to prepare for season 4 presumably once the press tour for the third season is at an end.
