America’s Got Talent: See Colin Cloud, ‘Real-Life Sherlock Holmes’ (video)
Before even beginning his act, Colin refers to himself as a “real-life Sherlock Holmes,” and he does have some of the profiling and investigative background to prove it. It’s almost a surprise that there aren’t more people within this sphere of act who come from this field, since it has to be a tremendous asset in assessing human behavior. A big part of this act revolves around determining which hand the judges are hiding a coin in based on their body language alone. Then, he creates a big finish using different words that are called out from the audience. We don’t want to spoil the end result for you here (that’s what the video below is for), but it’s a nice flourish and a different sort of payoff than you’ve seen from other mentalist acts on the show over the years.
The end of the effect is tremendous, but that’s only one of the reasons why Colin’s performance works so wonderfully. A big part of it has to do with his charisma as a performer, the Sherlock-inspired outfit, and his command of the room. When you have this many people shouting at you, it often can lead to the audience getting control of the performance and being a distraction more than an asset. That doesn’t happen here.
The smartest thing that Colin actually does here is put his Twitter account into his performance — America’s Got Talent is only temporary. Followers can last forever, at least so long as you’re not one of those people who goes on unfollow sprees. He seems almost like a lock to move on to the next round and eventually the live shows; beyond that, it will be up to his own creativity and if he can consistently win over viewers at home. He certainly has to date won over users on Facebook — his audition already has more than a million views!
