Riverdale season 2 spoilers: Cole Sprouse teases ‘darker’ story ahead

Cole Sprouse

Cole Sprouse was one of the big breakout stars of the first season of Riverdale, as he was effectively able to bring the Jughead character to life, which is not an easy feat. The character in the Archie comics was an enigma, so when we first heard that they were making this into a live-action television show, we were really curious to see how Sprouse was going to keep the mystery around Jughead while still being part of the group. We were pleasantly surprised that not only did Sprouse bring these two elements to Jughead, but found a way for us as the viewers to really care about what happens to him.

So following that first season, which featured him falling in love with the beautiful Betty Cooper and also finding himself in with some bad people, we have to wonder where is Jughead going to go from here? Is it possible for him to go even darker in the second season and if he does will the audience still support him? It’s weird to think about, but it’s certainly possible given how the finale ended with Cheryl Blossom burning down her family home, learning that her own father was both a killer (of her own twin brother) and committed suicide. The Cheryl fans are still in support of her and she’s gone pretty dark herself.

Speaking per TVLine, Sprouse teed up the upcoming second season with the following quote:

“I think the whole show is going to be getting darker and stranger … We’re going to be leaning into a lot of those qualities that a lot of people ended up loving in the first couple of episodes — this heavy cinematography, this overbearing coloration, this really dark content that’s kind of over-the-top and campy, but it’s taken very seriously.”

This relationship between the campy nature of the show and the brooding darkness is one of the reasons why Riverdale does work so well, and why it is one of the biggest TV surprises of 2017. It is remarkably entertaining and you do take much of what it’s doing seriously, and it’s all because of the writing, cast, and the atmosphere. It makes you believe that within this town, it is actually possible that all of these weird, unexpected things could actually happen.

With that said, the one thing we are hoping for moving into season 2 of Riverdale is that somehow, there is a way to balance the drama with some happiness for these characters. If the show can manage to figure out a way to do this, and present something that is indicative of high-school students everywhere, they should be able to still get away with some of the darkness that they inject into the show. Riverdale has done a brilliant job of integrating real life aspects of teenagers lives (like social media, and online picture/video bullying), so if they keep that going into season 2 we feel they will be able to keep the relatability of the show strong no matter how dark they go.

For now, the biggest problem is waiting until fall when the show is set to come back. At least we can watch reruns on Netflix all summer long to get us through the dry season.
