Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Could Meredith, Riggs still have a future?
On the surface, it does feel like there’s a clear answer to that: NO. Maybe you can actually take that to another level and add a few exclamation points to the end of it. It’s hard to necessarily come back from the sequence that unfolded. Meredith was the one to tell Nathan that Megan was alive, and then encouraged him to go to her, saying that if it was Derek who had somehow come back from the dead, she would be running at full speed to see him.
This all may be true, and that’s the beauty of the show — it explores humanity. For Meredith, she may have meant every word and still felt hurt when Riggs actually left and followed her advice. Despite the death, heartache, and anything and everything else that has encompassed her life over the years, she is still a human. She still lives and breathes, and she still understands and experiences pain. This is hardly the worst thing that Meredith has been through, but the sting may very well remain moving further into the season.
Now, the question that comes next is this: What if Megan is alive? This is a subject touched on recently at CarterMatt, but mostly through a different lens. All signs point to her being back, especially given Teddy’s connections to Megan and apparent capability to identify her. Yet, this is still a world where things can go array and misinformation can spread. It could be someone who looked so much like Megan that the difference wasn’t clear.
Or, there’s also the possibility that this Megan is so far gone from the Megan that Riggs knew that she’s unrecognizable, and a shell of the woman he loved. He may want to be with her, but Nathan is human in his own right. He could decide that he wants to care for her, but still be with Meredith. Would she ever want that? Even if it’s not Megan, would she ever accept him again after this moment? Grey’s Anatomy is far from just a romance, but it’s a show about complex relationships and few are more complex and interesting than this one. These are adult actions — there’s no apparent bitterness between Meredith and Riggs, but could that change under certain circumstances.
