Call the Midwife season 7 casting: Black Mirror alum signs up

Call the Midwife season 7 casting

One of the first bits of Call the Midwife season 7 casting news is officially confirmed, and it looks like there is a new midwife entering the mix! Leonie Elliott, who has appeared on Casualty, Black Mirror, and a wide array of other projects is set to appear on the show moving forward. Per the show’s official Facebook page, the character is described as the following:

“Lucille is the first West Indian midwife to feature as a regular character in our series, and she brings spirit, humour and intelligence to the lives of the Poplar nuns and midwives. Through Lucille’s eyes we begin to explore the immense contribution of the many Caribbean nurses who came to the UK in the 1960s to support a growing National Health Service.”

This is certainly a welcome stroke to the show’s diversity, given that the main cast to date has been largely made up of white actors. It should also be interesting to see a little more of her specific cultural background; West Indian people often are not highlighted on many shows, and seeing this story through her eyes should enable some further opportunities to understand the various things that separate us, but also the various things that bring us together. It should make for a fun, enlightening, and maybe even at times educational experience that brings some welcome new dimensions to the series.

In the same post confirming the news, show executive producer Pippa Harris said the following:

“We can’t wait to introduce the audience to our new midwife, Lucille, played by the hugely talented and captivating Leonie Elliott. From her first audition, Leonie managed to embody the essence of this elegant, intelligent, witty character who Heidi Thomas has created with her customary skill.”

New episodes of Call the Midwife season 7 will begin airing in the United Kingdom starting in the new year, but there will be a Christmas Special airing before that. Judging from the setting of the photo above, it’s certainly clear that, if nothing else, Elliott’s character will be featured in some wintry scenes.

One other interesting facet with the timing here is that this casting is coming right around the time that Call the Midwife season 6 is getting set to wrap up in America on PBS. To get some further news about that, be sure to head over to the link here.
