Modern Family renewed for season 9, season 10 by ABC
ABC confirmed on Wednesday that the long-running comedy starring Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet, and others has been formally renewed for both a season 9 and season 10. One of the reasons for the long delay on the renewal were lengthy negotiations between much of the cast and the network / studio, but it seems like most if not all of the details are now inked. Given the show’s declining live ratings this season, we’re not sure how substantial a raise was ultimately handed down. You do have to consider other factors, such as DVR viewing and the show’s strength in syndication.
In a statement, ABC programming head Channing Dungey passed along the following message:
“Modern Family has been the centerpiece of our comedy brand for eight seasons and we are thrilled to have it on our schedule for two more years.”
Meanwhile, Modern Family showrunner Steve Levitan added the following:
“We are beyond thrilled that we get to spend more time with these characters, these amazing actors, our ridiculously talented writers and our incredible crew — all of whom are like family to us. And the good kind of family, not the kind that argues with you all the time.”
Do we think that season 10 could be the final year for the show over at ABC? It’s certainly possible, but it also feels a little bit too early to start thinking about things like that right now. For now, just rejoice that you’re going to be getting a chance to see more crazy family adventures over the course of the coming two years. One of the other benefits of getting more of the show is that it helps to further enable ABC to launch some other comedies around it. Without Modern Family, we’re not entirely sure that shows like black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat have as big of a platform or an audience.
