Unfortunately, we come bearing some news today that may be sad for many people out there: The show doesn’t have a new episode on tap. This news was confirmed by the show’s official Twitter account (see below), but some eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed this some time ago.
The sad news about this hiatus is that it’s coming at a time in which there is absolutely plenty to talk about in terms of news items and highlights. Just remember for a minute or two here that this past week included not only the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, but also a Trump Rally the same day, more controversy when it comes to North Korea, and also some talk about tax reform that may or may not be something meaningful at the end of the day. We’re at the 100 days in office mark now, which is when a lot of people do love to start having these discussions about legacy.
We’re going to now make an admission that many out there may disagree with — We almost hope that Oliver doesn’t give us any Trump-related segments for a while. As a matter of fact, other than his very first piece on Trump where we saw the birth of Drumpf, we haven’t found any of his segments as fantastic as the ones where he looks at often-ignored issues, such as prison reform, the rights of U.S. territories, or even the recent piece on the French election. From the sporting side of things, his pieces on FIFA and football stadiums in America were fantastic. We also love the Bolivian zebras, since it was something so weird and wacky that we never would have imagined its existence.
In the end, we hope that Oliver sticks to bringing out the weirdest things in the world. It gives us a chance to learn something new, while relishing of course in his tremendous comedic talent.
There will be a new episode of Last Week Tonight airing next week on HBO. With that, we will of course be around to discuss its merits both in terms of comedy and also content. Consider us the Last Week Tonight Tonight, a place where we break down tonight the events of Last Week Tonight while looking ahead to the next week of Last Week Tonight. We really just wanted to write much of that out. (Photo: HBO.)
