Supergirl season 2: Melissa Benoist books major off-season project

Melissa Benoist

Just like another member of the DC – CW universe in Grant Gustin, Melissa Benoist of Supergirl seems keen to fill up part of her summer break with some other acting projects.

Take, for example, the latest announcement that she is set to appear in Waco, the upcoming six-part limited series set to air next year on The Paramount Network, which is the new name for Spike TV. The network hasn’t officially changed its name yet, but that is something that is coming. (We still don’t really get it given that Spike had a brand that was very specific and there wasn’t that much else out there quite like it.)

This series, which of course is about cult leader David Koresh, has a pretty ambitious cast as a whole. Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights and True Detective is set to play Koresh, while Boardwalk Empire actor Michael Shannon will be playing Gary Noesner, the lead FBI negotiator in the investigation. Benoist is going to play Koresh’s wife Rachel. Interestingly, this is the second time recently she’s played the role of a notorious figure in a recent project.

For those who are curious, this role is not going to be one that interrupts anything that Benoist has going on with Supergirl moving into the third season. She will film all of her necessary scenes this summer during her hiatus, and then she heads back to Vancouver in order to continue work on the CW hit. We mentioned Gustin earlier, and this is something that we mentioned that he was doing with some feature films. We also know that Stephen Amell did this when he played Casey Jones in the most-recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

While it may take away from some of her time off, one of the biggest merits to Benoist taking on a larger role here is that it allows her an opportunity to continue to flex her acting chops. eventually, we are going to see Supergirl conclude its run, and from there she is going to want to be able to move forward and do some other projects.

What do you think about this role for Melissa, and do you like it that she continues to diversify? Share some of your thoughts in the comments below!
