Agents of SHIELD season 4: Is Jason O’Mara leaving?

In the closing minutes of Tuesday night’s episode, we saw seemingly the end of Jeffrey Mace as the Patriot ended up dying while in the midst of a rescue mission. He was a complicated character from the start, given that he was someone Coulson often perceived as a thorn in his side just as much as someone he could work with as Director. Even his abilities were in many ways a manipulation. Yet, we do know that he cared about people within SHIELD, and the events within the Framework proved it further. He got a chance to die a true hero, and someone everyone will forever be able to admire.
With that said … is he really dead? Is Jason O’Mara leaving the show?
When we first learned about him signing up as Mace, our feeling was that this was probably a season-long arc. Yet, now we don’t want it to be. We would love to see Mace remain a part of the show in some way, however unlikely that may be, just because he brought so much in the way of power and layers to the role. Mace was at times adversarial, at points heroic, and also very vulnerable. He was a very different character than any that we’d seen on the show to date, and he provided a rather valuable service that we aren’t getting anywhere else within the show: A bridge between SHIELD and the rest of the country. Politics were never the strong suit of one Phil Coulson.
In the end, we’ll have to take a wait-and-see approach on Mace. Given all of the crazy ways people are revived on TV shows these days, we want to believe that there could be some sort of crazy manner in which we could see Mace come back into the universe. On that front, we have to cross our fingers and hope that there’s a way for it to happen. If not, hopefully O’Mara finds another great role sooner rather than later.
