Timeless season 2 renewal effort: Preparing the pitch

It feels like a good bit of time has transpired since we’ve written about the Timeless season 2 renewal effort, but it’s still going strong! We remain hopeful that another batch of episodes could be ordered by NBC, but it’s still a process to get there, as it is with any bubble show waiting for the decision.

In the post on Twitter below, you can see what showrunners Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan are doing to prepare for the network’s decision. They are back in the writers room working on a pitch to the network — they’ll present that next week, and then after that NBC may figure out what they want to do. We certainly know that these two guys are more than talented enough to come up with a compelling idea for a second season of the show, and they gave themselves a hell of a cliffhanger courtesy of Lucy’s mother being involved in Rittenhouse. They’ve put themselves in an interesting place where there could be so much more to explore in terms of material for the show.

We’ve already made some of our own thoughts clear about what NBC should do — effectively, air it in the place of Grimm on Friday nights. While there may not be as many viewers typically on Fridays, it could benefit from being at an earlier time of the night and from having lower ratings expectations. The show would likely continue to do well in terms of DVR viewership, and maybe it could find some stability there. One of the things that probably hurts it and many other new series at this point is their fear of quick cancellation — people don’t always want to get invested in a show if they are concerned over its future.

We hope that all of this works out, but we also concede that there are no guarantees that it will. We just think that there is something to be said for a show that offers up escapism on this high a level, emphasizes fun, and gives its audience a wide array of great characters that they can root for.

The latest that we would likely know about the future of Timeless is when we get around to the middle of May, given that this is when the major networks all tend to have their upfront presentations.
