Scandal 100th episode spoilers: How different will Fitz’s life be?
The first thing to remember here is that the premise of this episode is of the what-if / sliding doors persuasion, as Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) is going to get a little bit reflective in wondering what her life is going to be like in the event that the election is never rigged for Tony Goldwyn’s character. It’s fair to say that he never hits the Oval Office, and the entire show has a landscape that is incredibly different.
Here is what Goldwyn himself had to say on the subject to Entertainment Weekly:
“He’s not the president of the United States … He’s very different. It’s something of a study of how the circumstances of our lives shape our identity, how we see ourselves, and how we present ourselves to the world. It’s subtle, the difference, it’s just really interesting who he is and what he struggles with. He ultimately is quite different.”
Does this mean that he and Olivia will actually be together? That would be an interesting direction to take since it would mean that Fitz ultimately made a chose between power and love, and in spite of if he knew it at the time, he chose power. We know from the promos that Olivia is donning a wedding dress; the big mystery that is out there is who she is getting set to marry.
This episode probably will only be effectively in terms of influencing the main story as a look into the psychology of many of these characters. We’ll get a better sense of who they are, what they want, and where their stories could be going as we look towards the future. Somewhere, we like to think that there is a reality even within this fiction. Also, we have to think that a lot of these people are much happier — in some cases, it’s going to be hard to imagine them any more miserable.
