The Walking Dead season 7 finale: Why Dwight is pivotal player

Dwight

Moving into The Walking Dead season 7 finale on AMC Sunday night, there are many key players worth watching, whether it be a Negan, a Rick, a Morgan, a Eugene, a Sasha, or a Carol.

Yet, in surveying the entire field and looking at some of the key people involved, we do think that at the top of the list right now is probably Dwight. Austin Amelio’s character has been on a powerful emotional journey throughout the season; he’s not someone we are predisposed to like given what happened with Denise and what he did earlier this season to Daryl; yet, the writers have done a fairly good job over the course of the year of finding some ways in order to properly humanize him, and offer up a feeling that this is someone who never wanted to become this.

One of the best scenes of the entire season was Dwight heading over to Sherry’s cabin, where her saw the note from her making it clear that she was gone, and she felt like other than remorse and heartache over the situation that she put him in. He was no longer in a position to be the man that he once was. He was broken, transformed into someone who kills, and forced to be a servant to a man that he hates. She encouraged him to break free, and we could be now at a point where we are about to see that happen.

Going into the finale, Dwight is now a prisoner of Alexandria of his own making. Rick doesn’t know if he can trust him and Daryl wants to kill him, but he’s powerful. Dwight could be the ultimate double agent. He has more information on the Saviors than anyone, and he’s got a motive for revenge. However, no one on the Saviors may realize how strong that motive is, so he can act like an innocent prisoner. While there may be inanimate objects such as guns that are more important to this showdown than a physical person, we’d say that out of all the characters, Dwight is the one best inclined to turn the tide because of his information. He’s in a different situation than someone like Morgan, given that Morgan can only inflict so much damage on the battlefield as a single person. Dwight can position everyone to vulnerable spots and weaknesses … provided that he can be trusted. That remains the real question mark.
