American Idol season 16 reportedly not happening now at Fox, NBC

American Idol season 16

Even though it just appeared earlier today like there was some serious contention out there for American Idol season 16, it now looks all of a sudden as though said revival may not be happening at all.

For the time being, what we know is that per TMZ, it’s a “power struggle” that is keeping a potential show revival off the air. All plans seem to be shattered (for now) of a 2018 return to the air, though that could be changed at some point down the line.

Here’s a more detailed look at the reason why — FremantleMedia and Core are the two separate owners of the franchise, and they both have to agree on something in order to happen. Unfortunately, in this case Core apparently felt as though Frementale was doing everything that they could to get them to agree to a deal at NBC over than one at Fox. Why is that? America’s Got Talent also airs on NBC, so the Core fear was that they were trying to use a deal at this network for their own benefit. Basically, a conflict of interest. Maybe Core felt like it was better to return the show to its original network, or simply did not want to be pushed into a decision.

While the indication in the report is that there probably will not be a deal anytime soon, we’re not 100% on that. This feels like one of those snags that with the right conversations, can be fixed up and changed around. We almost feel like there are some reports that come out here and there that are meant mostly to ensure that deals get done and there are people talking — it’s almost a part of the negotiation. We could see this being one of those said deals, given that there are two clear networks interested in the property and we have to think that both production companies like making money.

Also, if there is more moneymaking potential right now airing the show on NBC rather than Fox (which we do think there is), what is the reason for being so upset in the first place? Just consider this something further to think about.

If you missed it, be sure to head over here to read our full report about why NBC would want the show in the first place, especially when they’ve already got some established franchises on their roster. (Photo: Fox.)
