Why The Voice could scale back for American Idol reboot at NBC

The Voice

One of the stories that we’re closely following at the moment is the chatter that American Idol could make the move over from its most-recent home at Fox over to a new one at NBC. Fox previously ended the show after season 15, so it’s not too surprising that FremantleMedia (the show’s production house) would be considering some new homes for the franchise.

As for why specifically NBC may want it, one of the biggest reasons seems to be a mere interest in scaling back on their own series The Voice from two seasons a year down to one. There are reports that at least one of their longstanding coaches would like to scale back, and based on what reality chief Paul Telegdy told The Hollywood Reporter recently, this is something that the network is also considering:

“The Voice has been a phenomenon that nourishes this place in a big, big way. And at the same time, everyone involved in it — people that work 52 weeks a year on The Voice — have been on a treadmill, and we can’t let them off. I’d love to alleviate that at some point.”

We do think that a network will have American Idol season 16 on the air by 2018 at the latest. However, we’re not denying that this is a risky proposition for NBC. While we do personally find The Voice as a show with significant shortcomings, in between its difficult middle rounds and its inability to date to find a significant star after the fact, they do have devoted fans and not all of them will be happy with the show going down to one a year, especially so that a show that they may not like can return. Personally, we’re a little more okay with it given that American Idol is the only reason why The Voice exists, since everyone wanted to replicate this success. Plus, there’s enough of a track record to think that American Idol could still produce a big star, though we’d argue that the last one the show helped to foster was Adam Lambert back on season 4. He, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, and Kelly Clarkson are in retrospect the big four talents to emerge from that show and have consistent stardom after the fact.

With that said, we do think there are other artists from the show, such as Clay Aiken, David Archuleta, Scotty McCreery, and Fantasia, who have all probably found more success than almost every other Voice alum, as well.
