The Flash season 3 episode 18 review: Barry’s future; Killer Frost’s present

The Flash season 3 episode 18 review

Who is Abra Kadabra? From the jump of this The Flash season 3 episode 18 review, let’s touch on that. He’s a guy from far in the future, and someone with incredible nanotechnology skill. He’s really not a magician, but he does a good job posing as one.

The big reason for his awesome presence in this episode was that he claimed to possess the knowledge as to Savitar’s identity. Whether or not he actually did was a great question, but one Barry Allen was willing to ignore briefly for one reason alone — he claimed to pass the Savitar information along in exchange for his freedom. After some conversations with Iris, Barry was able to realize that negotiating with a villain and a killer probably was not a great idea. Joe West, however, did not see things nearly as clearly. He was willing to let Abra Kadabra free in return for the information, but upon doing so, Gypsy came in and tried to interfere. Ultimately, she ended up screwing everything up in the pursuit of justice. Joe didn’t get the name, and the villain still escaped.

To make matters worse, Caitlin was hurt badly in the ensuing aftermath, and she found herself in a precarious position — in order to save her life, she had two options. Either she took off the necklace, become Killer Frost, and heal herself, or she allow Julian to try to perform surgery using a mirror. It’s not something that he was familiar with, but she showed her mettle in staying awake during her own surgery. In the end, it turned out to be a success! This was touch-and-go for a while, but she was able to get better without becoming frosty.

After the surgery was over, the team figured out why exactly Abra Kadabra was stealing so much tech in the first place: He was trying to build a time machine to get back to his own era. Eventually, the team was able to figure that out and stop him. In the process, we learned why capturing him was so important to Gypsy, given that he was responsible for killing her partner many years ago.

The aftermath of the arrest

Barry allowed himself to be content with not learning the identity of Savitar, at least with the previous arrangement. He did try to appeal to him as a human being for the name, but he still couldn’t get the name. What he did do is drop a hint about the potential arrival of Clifford DeVoe (read more here), and made it clear that Barry and Abra Kadabra are enemies in the present.

Ultimately, Barry determined that the only thing that he could do in order to save Iris, and to figure out a way to stop Savitar for good, was to travel all the way to the future. Therefore, they’ll be on a level playing field.

The Caitlin cliffhanger

Barry’s journey tonight actually ended early, and we were left with an extended scene where it appeared for a time as though Caitlin Snow seemed to succumb to her injuries despite seemingly getting better. Julian, who had just kissed Caitlin and clearly was falling in love with her, ripped off the necklace to keep her alive. Unfortunately, she’s not quite Caitlin anymore. Killer Frost is back, and it’s not clear if she can be turned around ever again this time…

Overall, this was a heck of a cliffhanger to a heck of a great episode of the show. It gave you a ton of information tonight, and then a fantastic cliffhanger for the future (pun intended). Grade: A-.
