The Voice Battle Rounds: Hunter Plake and Jack Cassidy sing ‘Dancing on My Own’

Hunter Plake

Hunter Plake and Jack Cassidy are going to be performing together on The Voice Monday night, and with that, we’re going to get a great opportunity to see the two parties take on a Robyn hit. “Dancing on My Own” is a great song.

For those wondering, the version that these two guys are doing for Team Alicia Monday night is closer to the version by Calum Scott, the former Britain’s Got Talent contestant that you can see and hear below. We love his version because it’s so passionate, heartfelt, and we actually love how he doesn’t change around some of the genders in the song. It gives it a more interesting narrative.

We admit that we’re always going to be partial to Scott’s vocal, but Plake and Cassidy do a very good job here and it’s not altogether difficult to figure out why the coaches would be interested in a steal … or at least the coaches who still can. The one thing that does confuse us slightly here is that “Dancing on My Own” is really a song lyrically that is about a feeling of aloneness and heartbreak. It’s harder to share that, and the idea of two people singing “Dancing on My Own” together just feels all sorts of strange.

Of the two, we’d say that Hunter is maybe slightly better, but this is one of those battles where it’s not altogether difficult to see the coaches going either way with it. Our main feeling is just that they should pick whoever they think will do more interesting, artistic stuff in the next round. We do think that we’re at a point in the series’ run now where uniqueness is far more important than ever before, and you do need to do everything that you can to be a good performer, but also memorable enough that people will have some recollection of who you are after the fact.

Ultimately, we feel fairly confident that both parties will make it to the Knockout Rounds in the end.

Results – On the show tonight, we saw Alicia go with Jack for her team! However, Hunter got two chairs to turn for him and he went with Gwen Stefani as his new mentor. Both guys are sticking around.
