Lucifer season 2 episode order shakeup: Four episodes held for season 3

Lucifer season 2

Just in case you were wondering how Lucifer season 2 was going to be able to air the remainder of its 22-episode season without it ending in the middle of the summer, we’ve now got an answer. Unfortunately, it’s not one that everyone out there will love.

In a series of posts on Twitter last night, co-showrunner Joe Henderson made it clear that there are only going to be eighteen episodes airing this season, and the remaining four that were originally a part of the order are now being saved until season 3 this fall / next spring:

“For [Lucifer], we will be airing the last 5 episodes of season 2 in May! 5 you say?? But the show is 22?? Where are my remaining 4 episodes? Well, we designed this season to be an 18 episode arc because we originally were going to be 18 episodes. But then we got 4 more! Surprise! So we decided to create four episodes that let us play around a bit. Dig deeper into the character stories, play with format a bit, etc. We didn’t know whether they’d air this season or next until now. Now we do. So bad news is you need to wait for them. And I know that sucks. But the good news is we’ll have at LEAST 22 episodes of Lucifer next season. Maybe 26?? Probably 24? Hard to say this early #Lucifer”

One thing that definitely does help when it comes to the future of Lucifer is that Fox’s Monday-night lineup has fared rather badly without the show around. With that, we could easily see a 26-episode order next season with new episodes spanning almost every time of the year. It’ll be a while before we ultimately know for sure, but we are very much intrigued and interested in finding out precisely what some of the plans for Fox as a network are. At least rejoice for now the fact that there is already a season 3 renewal out there — there are some other shows, including Gotham, that don’t have their fate anywhere near as set in stone at the moment. This is also far from the first time Fox has done something like this with their scheduling, as Bones has done something fairly similar in the past.

Let’s just hope that this lengthy wait for new Lucifer episodes proves to be worth it — we know that we’ll have some further details about some of the stories ahead over at the link here, so keep checking back leading up to the show’s return in May.
